Cathryn's Voice Articles

I love reading and writing about the voice and sharing my insights with other voice teachers and students. Find below a selection of my articles which are published online.

Take a Deep Breath: Teaching the Inhalation for Singing More Effectively

This is my most popular online article, I suppose because it deals with something so fundamental in singing technqiue, i.e. how best to inhale! The article looks specifically at releasing abdominal tension, something most beginning singers have difficulty with. I spent several months investigating different approaches to this release, involving my students in my research.

This article looks at the benefits of improvisation for singers. Students love improvising on the whole, once they have got over their initial trepidation about jumping into the 'vocal unknown'. There are tips here for getting started with this most important part of musicianship.

Promoting Good Vocal Model Awareness in Karaoke Singers

No, this title doesn't quite trip off the tongue but don't let that put you off! The article looks at the phenomenon of karaoke singing and its impact on voice training and singers' expectations. I discuss methods of using karaoke to help singers improve their technique.

Possible Selves: Harnessing Instrinsic Motivation in Mature Singing Students
